If you have an app idea and you have been Googling "how much does it cost to build an app," you have probably seen answers ranging from $1,000 to $500,000. That is not helpful. Let us break it down honestly.

The Short Answer

A simple mobile app built in India typically costs between $2,000 and $15,000. A complex app with real-time features, payments, and a backend can go up to $30,000 to $50,000. Here is why the range is so wide — and how to figure out where your app falls.

What Affects the Cost?

1. What platforms do you need?

  • Android only — cheapest option
  • iOS only — similar to Android
  • Both iOS and Android — if built with Flutter (one codebase), costs almost the same as one platform. If built natively, roughly doubles the cost.

At Rooted Tech, we use Flutter for almost all our mobile apps. One codebase, two platforms, half the cost. That is why Indian Flutter developers can often deliver what a US agency charges $50,000 for — at a fraction of the price.

2. Does your app need a backend?

A backend is the server-side part — where your data lives, where users log in, where things sync across devices.

  • No backend (offline app, simple tool) — lower cost
  • Firebase backend (real-time sync, authentication, push notifications) — moderate cost, fast to build
  • Custom backend (complex business logic, large data) — higher cost

3. How many screens and features?

Every screen takes time. A basic app might have 8 to 12 screens. A complex marketplace might have 40 or more. Features like user login, real-time chat, payments, maps, push notifications, and admin dashboard each add time and cost.

Real Cost Examples

App TypeEstimated Cost (India)
Simple utility app (5-8 screens)$2,000 to $4,000
Social or community app$5,000 to $12,000
Marketplace or booking app$8,000 to $20,000
Full platform (app + web + admin)$15,000 to $40,000

Why India Is the Smart Choice for International Clients

A Flutter developer in the US charges $80 to $150 per hour. In India, a skilled Flutter developer charges $10 to $25 per hour. The technology is identical. The frameworks are the same. The difference is the cost of living.

We at Rooted Tech built NestSpace — a full rental platform live on Google Play and the App Store — with real-time chat, VoIP calling, Firebase backend, and a Next.js web companion.

Hidden Costs to Watch Out For

1. App Store fees — Apple charges $99/year, Google charges a one-time $25

2. Backend hosting — Firebase has a free tier that covers most small apps

3. Maintenance — budget 15-20% of build cost per year for updates

4. Design — if you need custom UI/UX design, add $1,000 to $3,000

How to Get an Accurate Quote

Do not ask "how much for an app." Instead, come prepared with what problem your app solves, who your users are, the 5 most important features, whether you have a design or wireframe, and which platforms you need.
