How to Find a Good App Developer (Without Getting Burned)

Hiring the wrong app developer is an expensive mistake. Here is exactly what to look for — and the red flags that should make you walk away.

Hiring the wrong app developer is one of the most expensive mistakes a business can make. We have talked to dozens of clients who spent $5,000 to $20,000 with developers who disappeared, delivered broken apps, or simply could not do what they promised.

The Most Important Thing: Look for Live Apps

Ask every developer you are considering: can I download and use an app you have built? Not a demo. Not a video. Not screenshots. An actual app on the Play Store or App Store that real people use.

At Rooted Tech, our app NestSpace is live on Google Play and the App Store. Download it. Use the search, browse listings, see how the UI feels.

Green Flags — Signs of a Good Developer

They ask questions to ask before hiring before quoting — A good developer cannot give you an accurate quote without understanding your project.

They suggest simpler solutions — "Actually, you do not need a custom backend for this — Firebase will save you $3,000." A developer who makes you spend less is one you can trust.

They are honest about timelines — If a developer says they can build your full marketplace app in 3 weeks, run.

They communicate clearly in English — Communication is half the job.

Red Flags — Walk Away From These

No live apps in their portfolio, extremely low prices ($500 for a full app), vague proposals without specific screens and features, no contract or milestone structure.

Questions to Ask Before Hiring

Can I download and use an app you have built? What happens if the app needs changes after launch? Will I own all the code? How do you handle App Store submission and rejections? What is your milestone and payment structure?

At Rooted Tech, we have built and shipped our own products. We know what it takes to go from idea to App Store. Start with a conversation at rootedtech.in/contact.

I built NestSpace — a rental and roommate-finding platform — from scratch, solo, and shipped it on both Google Play and the App Store. At Rooted Tech, I build Flutter apps, Firebase backends, and Next.js platforms for startups and businesses worldwide. Everything I write here comes from real experience building real products.
