I Have an App Idea — What Do I Do Next?
You have a great app idea but no idea where to start. Here is a simple, honest guide on what to do next — from validating your idea to finding the right developer.
You have had that lightbulb moment. An app idea that could solve a real problem, make life easier, or maybe even make some money. Now what?
This is the most common question we get at Rooted Tech. Here is exactly what to do — step by step.
Step 1: Write It Down Properly
Before you talk to any developer, write down your idea clearly. Answer these questions:
- ▸What problem does it solve? Be specific.
- ▸Who is it for? Students? Working professionals? Small businesses?
- ▸What are the 3 most important features? Not 20 features — just the 3 that make it work.
- ▸How will it make money? Subscriptions, one-time purchase, ads, commission?
Step 2: Validate Before You Build
The biggest mistake first-time app builders make is spending money before checking if people actually want it.
Simple ways to validate your idea first: talk to 10 potential users, create a simple landing page with an email signup, or check if similar apps exist. If they do, that is actually good — it means there is a market.
Step 3: Define Your MVP
MVP stands for Minimum Viable Product. It is the simplest version of your app that still delivers the core value.
For most apps, an MVP includes user registration and login, the 2 to 3 core features only, basic but clean design, and working on Android first.
An MVP takes 6 to 12 weeks to build and costs a fraction of the full app.
Step 4: Find the Right Developer
Green flags: they ask a lot of questions before quoting, they have live apps you can download, they suggest simpler solutions, they are honest about timelines.
Red flags: they quote immediately without understanding your idea, they have only mockups in their portfolio, they promise everything in 2 weeks for very cheap.
Step 5: Start Small, Launch Fast
Do not wait for the perfect app. Launch the MVP, get real users, collect feedback, improve.
How Much Should You Budget?
For an MVP: simple app costs $2,000 to $5,000, medium app costs $5,000 to $12,000, complex app costs $12,000 to $25,000.
