Signs You Have Hired the Wrong App Developer
Something feels off with your app developer but you are not sure? Here are the clear signs you have made a bad hire — and what to do about it.
Most people realize too late that they hired the wrong developer. Here are the warning signs — and what to do if you recognize them.
Early Warning Signs (First Two Weeks)
Communication delays — If they take more than 24 hours to respond to normal messages without explanation during the first two weeks, this pattern will only get worse.
No detailed plan or timeline — A good developer, after understanding your requirements, should be able to give you a rough breakdown of tasks and a realistic timeline.
Questions that seem off — If their questions suggest they do not understand basic aspects of your project that were clearly documented, that is a red flag.
Mid-Project Warning Signs
Deliverables that look nothing like the spec — Major departures from agreed design or functionality without discussion.
Excuses instead of updates — "The API was down," "I was sick" as routine explanations for missed deadlines. Good developers work around obstacles and communicate proactively.
Demo that only works under specific conditions — Testing on one specific phone with test data pre-loaded. Real apps work reliably across conditions.
What To Do
If you have recognized more than two of these signs, act quickly. Document everything in writing. Trigger the next milestone payment only after issues are resolved. In severe cases, bring in a second developer to audit the code.
