What is Flutter Used For? A Plain-English Guide for Non-Developers

You keep hearing about Flutter but not sure what it actually is or what kind of apps it can build. Here is a simple, jargon-free explanation.

If you have talked to an app developer recently, they have probably mentioned Flutter. But what is it actually? And what kind of apps can it build?

What Flutter Is

Flutter is a tool made by Google that lets developers build apps for phones, tablets, and websites — all from a single set of code.

Before Flutter, if you wanted an app on both iPhone and Android, you needed two separate apps built by two separate teams using two different programming languages. Double the time, double the cost.

Flutter changed this. A developer writes the app once, and it works on both iPhone and Android.

What Flutter Apps Look and Feel Like

Flutter apps do not look like compromises. They look and feel like native vs Flutter apps — smooth, fast, and indistinguishable from apps built specifically for each platform. This is because Flutter draws its own user interface instead of using the phone built-in components.

Real Apps Built with Flutter

Some apps you have probably used are built with Flutter: Google Pay, BMW connected car app, Nubank (one of the world largest digital banks). And thousands of smaller apps — startup MVPs, internal business tools, rental platforms, booking apps — are built with Flutter every day.

What Types of Apps Work Well with Flutter

Consumer apps — social apps, marketplace apps, booking apps, rental platforms, e-commerce.

Real-time apps — live chat, live tracking, collaborative features.

Business apps — internal tools, field service apps, inventory management.

Apps that need to be on both iOS and Android — which is most apps.

What Flutter Is Not Ideal For

Games with heavy 3D graphics (use Unity instead) and apps needing very deep platform-specific integration (rare).

How Flutter Affects Your Cost

One developer, one codebase, two platforms. Versus two developers, two codebases, two platforms. Building with Flutter typically what a Flutter app costs 30-50% less than building separate native iOS and Android apps.

At Rooted Tech, Flutter is our primary tool for mobile app development. Our app NestSpace is live on both Google Play and the App Store, handles real-time chat, VoIP calling, and Firebase backend from a single codebase.

I built NestSpace — a rental and roommate-finding platform — from scratch, solo, and shipped it on both Google Play and the App Store. At Rooted Tech, I build Flutter apps, Firebase backends, and Next.js platforms for startups and businesses worldwide. Everything I write here comes from real experience building real products.
