The Startup Ecosystem in Pune — An Honest Overview for 2026
Pune is growing as a startup city. Here is an honest picture of what the ecosystem actually looks like — the strengths, the gaps, and what it means for founders.
I built a startup in Pune. NestSpace is a rental platform for the Pune market, and building it here gave me a ground-level view of what the Pune startup ecosystem actually looks like — not the promotional version.
What Pune Actually Has Going For It
Real engineering talent. COEP, MIT Pune, Symbiosis, Pune University — these colleges produce tens of thousands of engineering graduates annually. A meaningful percentage of them stay in Pune. Finding competent developers here is genuinely easier than in most Indian cities outside Bengaluru.
Lower costs than Bengaluru. Office space in Pune is 40 to 60 percent cheaper than comparable space in Bengaluru. Developer salaries are lower. Cost of living allows founders and early employees to stretch limited funding further.
Manufacturing and industrial base. Pune's automotive and manufacturing heritage (Bajaj, Tata, Mercedes, Volkswagen) creates interesting opportunities for tech startups in industrial IoT, supply chain optimization, and manufacturing automation — markets that Bengaluru's consumer-tech-focused ecosystem does not serve as well.
Real estate and property tech. Pune's rapid residential development creates genuine demand for proptech. NestSpace exists because the rental market in Pune has real problems that needed solving.
Where the Ecosystem Falls Short
Venture capital access. Most serious VC activity in India happens in Mumbai and Bengaluru. Pune founders often have to travel and build investor relationships in other cities. This is getting better — funds like Blume and some angels are increasingly active in Pune — but it remains a gap.
Community density. Bengaluru's startup community has a density of founders, investors, and advisors that Pune has not matched. The serendipitous introductions and cross-pollination that happen naturally in Bengaluru require more deliberate effort in Pune.
Talent for non-technical roles. Finding experienced product managers, growth marketers, and business development people in Pune is harder than finding engineers.
The Honest Verdict
Pune is a good place to build a startup if you are building something for the Pune or Maharashtra market, if cost efficiency matters more than access to the VC circus, or if your product is in proptech, manufacturing tech, or education.
For consumer internet startups chasing rapid VC-backed growth, Bengaluru still has advantages that Pune has not closed.
