The First Week After Launch

Bugs you did not find in testing will appear. Real users use your app in ways you did not anticipate. Plan for at least one bug-fix update in the first two weeks after launch.

Users will have feedback. Some useful, some contradictory. The skill is figuring out which feedback reflects a real problem versus personal preference.

Ongoing Maintenance

Operating system updates — Apple and Google update iOS and Android every year. Major updates sometimes break things in existing apps.

Third-party SDK updates — Firebase, Google Maps, payment gateways all update regularly. Sometimes they break backward compatibility.

Security patches — Vulnerabilities in the libraries you use need to be patched promptly.

How Much Does Maintenance Cost?

A rough rule: budget 15-20% of your build cost per year for app maintenance services. If your app cost $10,000 to build, budget $1,500 to $2,000 per year to keep it running well.
